Moody and Jared spent a couple weeks running Super Mario 64, and Moody drew this during one of Jared's runs.
Moody was fascinated by how Mario's head looks on the main menu versus in game. Mario's portions are pretty consistent between the two models, despite how much simpler the in-game model is.
So, Moody tried to draw Mario with the level of detail of the main menu head model, and put him in Tall Tall Mountain for an unobtrusive, but pleasant background.
I love this old school Mario design with the chubbier cheeks and a slightly older appearance in general. I also really like the shading on the leftmost mushroom.
